I’m giving this a 4 out of 5.
The newspaper-style background instantly stands out and adds credibility, thanks to the perception that print media is more trustworthy (a 2021 Havas report backs this up).
By mimicking a newspaper layout, this ad cuts through the clutter of social media ads that mostly look alike.
I also love how they use a highlighter to draw attention to a specific number, which sparks curiosity and makes you want to watch the video.
2. Hook Score:
This earns a 2 out of 5 from me.
While the thumbnail does a great job, the first three seconds of the video do almost nothing. That’s a wasted opportunity. The static newspaper frame isn’t enough to keep viewers around, and they might drop off.
The newspaper-style headline is a good idea but could be more attention-grabbing with a clear hierarchy to guide the viewer’s eye. Right now, it’s not fully leveraging the hook potential.
3. Retention Score:
I’d give this a solid 4 out of 5.
If viewers push past those first three seconds, they’ll likely stay for the entire video because it packs a lot of information. There’s so much going on that people may rewatch to absorb all the details, which boosts retention.
4. Click Score:
This gets a 4.5 out of 5 from me.
In the final frames, the ad clearly lists the benefits and offers credible data, prompting users to click. It also includes a specific CTA at the end, which many video ads miss.
Since it’s been running for a while, the ad has gained strong social proof, further lifting the CTR. Plus, addressing a common skincare misconception makes it more compelling, encouraging people to check out what’s being offered.
5. Ugly Score:
I’m giving this a 4 out of 5.
The newspaper layout feels authentic and trustworthy, helping it stand out from typical social media ads. That’s evident from the engagement it has.
I docked one point because it switches to a more conventional product and CTA frame at the end. Sticking with the newspaper style throughout could have elevated the ad’s credibility even more.
6. Congruency Score:
This is a 5 out of 5.
Clicking the ad takes you to a landing page that features the exact same offer shown in the ad, instantly validating your choice.
The page is clean, user-friendly, and showcases product benefits, testimonials, and CTAs right where they should be.
Caption:
This caption is spot-on.
It’s well-written and structured, with paragraph breaks and emojis that keep the text easy to read. It also effectively highlights the product benefits and includes a well-defined CTA.
Mentioning free delivery is a nice touch that enhances the offer and is sure to boost the CTR.
How can you use this for your business?
- The newspaper-style layout in this ad taps into a design format that people already associate with credibility. Think about how you can use familiar formats like this in your own ads. For example, you could use layouts that resemble emails, handwritten notes, or even text messages—anything that feels real and trustworthy to your audience.
- Even if your hook isn’t perfect, you can retain viewers by delivering value-packed content. This ad packs a lot of information, encouraging users to watch multiple times.
- One of the best things about this ad is how seamlessly it transitions to the landing page. The offer, visuals, and tone match perfectly, which reassures users and keeps them engaged. When you design your ads, ensure that your landing page feels like a natural continuation of the ad itself—this builds trust and reduces drop-offs.
